The Story

Some endings arrive before the day has a chance to begin.
In The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852), John Martin depicts a world consumed by its own excess—cities collapsing under divine judgment, illuminated by fire rather than dawn. Salvation exists, but it is fragile, conditional, and easily lost.

Before Morning captures the final hours before annihilation—the heavy darkness before sunrise that never comes. It is the scent of consequence, suspended between warning and destruction, where morality is no longer negotiable.

Artistic & Conceptual Interpretation

Martin’s dramatic vision transforms punishment into spectacle: flames tear through architecture, smoke eclipses the sky, and the earth itself seems to recoil. Immoral behavior is not abstract here—it is answered with absolute finality.

This candle imagines a city in its last moments. Buildings burn, wood collapses, dust rises from shattered ground. The air is thick, heated, and metallic with ash. There is no escape in the atmosphere—only the certainty that the night will end in ruin.

Olfactory Profile

The fragrance opens with charred wood, immediate and uncompromising, evoking collapsing structures and burning beams.
Smoked leather follows, dense and animalic, recalling human presence amid destruction—bodies fleeing, belongings abandoned.
At the base, amber glows beneath the smoke, warm and resinous, suggesting embers still alive beneath the wreckage.

The composition is fiery and woody, defined by charcoal, smoke, and heat—a scent that lingers like ash on skin long after the flame is gone.
